The IK Apparel, an apparel factory owned by the I Apparel International Group (IAIG), stole the show at the recently concluded groundbreaking edition of the EuroCham Cambodia’s CSR Garment Awards last October 20, 2023, garnering two major awards for social and environmental excellence out of several other hopeful aspirants.

Organized by EuroCham along with recognized authorities in garment production, including the Textile, Apparel, Footwear & Travel Goods Association in Cambodia (TAFTAC), Responsible Business Hub, and GIZ Fabric Cambodia, the prestigious event brought together some of the country’s major industry players in a glamorous gala dinner and awards night, as motivated by the goal to recognize their remarkable efforts and initiatives in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and sustainability.

In a country where the economic landscape relies majorly on textile and tourism industries, EuroCham’s first edition of the CSR Garment Awards marks a significant feat in Cambodia’s history.

It was in mid-July when EuroCham first announced its plans to host the event and called for interested participants to prepare their applications. The participants were allowed to apply for a maximum of two categories per factory or candidate. They may choose among the social excellence, environmental excellence, and innovation categories, and pick the most appropriate subcategory specified under each.

From the submission of entries to the actual selection of winners, the intricate judging process took almost a month. The participants were required to submit a document describing their CSR or sustainability project, which needs to gain a remarkable first impression from a distinguished panel of judges for each category to be shortlisted as finalist. The selected judges are some of the recognized leaders in CSR and sustainability. In addition, the organizers have partnered with international certifying bodies such as the Control Union, SGS, Bureau Veritas, and TUV Rheinland, to conduct an on-site visit to verify and audit the initiatives and projects described in the application.

IK Apparel filed applications under the Social Excellence–Workers Empowerment and Well-being, and Environmental Excellence–Sustainable Energy Management categories, in which the factory was hailed as the champion for both. Among all the shortlisted finalists, IK Apparel is the only one that received multiple titles.

The factory, which produces products made of sustainable fabrics for several years now, has been recognized for its impressive initiatives such as the iCare Community Support Organization (iCCS), a social foundation specializing in education, healthcare, and community outreach programs; the BCA Singapore gold-rated factory building design; and adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies.

“While it makes us proud to be recognized as one of the stellar examples in CSR, at the end of the day, we know that we’ve only done our part in the shared responsibility of elevating the quality of life of Cambodia’s garment workers and their families and in making a difference in the country’s marginalized communities. Our work doesn’t stop here. It is just the beginning of more exciting and meaningful things to come for our beneficiaries,” the official statement from IAIG states

Commenting on their sustainability initiatives, the IAIG also added that their company exists not just to reduce the environmental impacts brought by the apparel industry but to work on a mission to craft only the good kind of impact for the planet. “Starting today, we promise to carry this recognition not only with pride and honor, but with great responsibility to constantly do what’s right and ethical,” they said.
